I've only read the first book so far. I thought it was excellent - well pace, good character development, original, adequately detailed environment, some great action, etc - until the part

SPOILER

where the skaa army they where amassing suddenly attacks a neighboring cities garrison. After this, I find the quality to go down hill a bit, primarily because I felt things just got too rushed and some of the plot resolutions at the end were just too convenient and hasty. It was as if Mr. Sanderson felt that the book was long enough and it was time to wrap things up - regardless of the effect on consistency with the rest of the book.

Great book on the whole. Perhaps I'm just being a bit selfish and just wanted more of a good thing.

Comment on The Window (RPG System) by MikeDowney

I hold The Wondow in high regard and have used it for a number of adventures over the past 6-7 years. Any time I want to run an adventure that doesn't easily fit into D&D, I look to The Window. I would use The Window exclusively, but it's very hard to find enough players to establish a Window group. It seems that Dungeons & Dragons has had such a strong grip on the throats of gamers for so long that they feel they are not playing a valid game system if it isn't D&D. However, the times that I am able to convince a group to play a Window adventure, everyone has a blast! But then, it's back to familiar D&D.

I feel that one of the most often mention aspects of The Window may be the very reason why it has not made bigger waves throughout the roleplaying community - that it is free to obtain and use.

The Window is the epitome of an exception to the rule, "If it's too good to be true, it must be." I think that fact that this revolutionary system is free of charge evokes this knee-jerk estimation and prevent people from appreciating the simple beauty of a system that serves the core of roleplaying games - roleplaying.

Perhaps if Scott Lininger had charged $10-15 dollars from the beginning, people would have taken The Window more seriously. It's a fact, that people that live in a Capitalist world, assign value and worth based on the amount of money they have put out. As a result of being offered to the world without charge (while a noble and altruistic sentiment), there are only small pockets of Window fans.

I came across a website recently that had started talking about revamping the Window, giving it new graphics and recreating the rules, to create a 3rd edition with the tenative (reluctant) blessings if Scott Lininger. The last active post (beyond my own from trying to find out the status) is dated about 6 months ago. I read many of the posts and kept coming back to the same questions: Why? and What happened? As far as I can tell, the fruit died on the vine. Maybe that's a good thing because I didn't see anything wrong with the 2nd Edition rules.

Perhaps the focus of work should not be on re-inventing the wheel, but is developing campaigns and adventures that use the Window system. WIth such a free-form system, there could easily be campaign worlds in every roleplaying genre and cross-genre.

Admitedly, a reprint of of the 2nd Ed., with new graphics, in hard cover would be really nice to see. I, for one, would shell out the $20, if for now other reason than to feed the animal and hope that the world would buy into such a great idea, a system that has literally been sitting on the table of nearly 10 years.

If anyone knows of an active Window group or someone who is (or wants to) creating campaigns and adventures for the Window, please pass my email address: mrmike65@hotmail.com.

I wouldnt go so far as to lump ALL high schools together, as it is the District's and their Superintendents which make the 'release' decisions. When I was attending, circa the 1990's, HISD always seemed a bit behind on announcing releases. And to be fair, the driving student population only accounted for a fraction of a couple of grade levels - I cannot imagine it changing much since then.

This post is true. I've played RPGs all my life, and "The Window" is great for veteran players.

I like this system also because it's very easy to learn, so new (veteran) players can join quickly.

I loved these books as well, but a movie regardless of how well or poor it is made will change my view on the books themselves.
