I thought it was excellent - well pace, good character development, original, adequately detailed environment, some great action, etc - until the part SPOILER where the skaa army they where amassing suddenly attacks a neighboring cities garrison. After this, I find the quality to go down hill a bit, primarily because I felt things just got too rushed and some of the plot resolutions at the end were just too convenient and hasty. It was as if Mr. Sanderson felt that the book was long enough and it was time to wrap things up - regardless of the effect on consistency with the rest of the book. Great book on the whole. Perhaps I'm just being a bit selfish and just wanted more of a good thing. I’ve only read the first book so far. When I was attending, circa the 1990's, HISD always seemed a bit behind on announcing releases. And to be fair, the driving student population only accounted for a fraction of a couple of grade levels - I cannot imagine it changing much since then.
